You may have heard tales of a spring tonic…years ago multitudes of children were subjected to a large dose of castor oil as a good cleansing tonic. It kept them healthy! Just as debris collected in their homes filtration systems it also collected in their bodies filters…the largest of which is the liver. The Spring Tonic provided an important service to the children and their immune systems. It is even more important today given the number of toxins we are exposed to…many of them invisible.
Our liver is responsible for removing dangerous toxins such as, medications, herbicides, pesticides, hormones, cleaning products, viral endotoxins, cellular waste, and alcohol. If our liver did not filter out these toxins we would die. You see, the liver is also part of the circulatory system. It actually contains more blood than the heart and it also releases nutrients into the bloodstream to be distributed throughout the entire body. Beyond that the liver produces bile which is essential to the body’s ability to process fats that feed our brain and cells.
One major reason we need to greatly respect our livers is because they help remove viral invaders like the cold and flu bugs that torment us. The liver is an integral part of the Immune system and immune cells. I know you appreciate the function of your liver even though it may be something you think about only in rare instances. That is what folks like me are here for. We are here to remind you that you should not take your body or its systems for granted. The function of the liver need not be entirely understood to be appreciated but some understanding is helpful. Let me explain!
We require 3 key amino acids to maintain healthy liver function and provide the necessary glutathione levels. Glutathione is an amino acid that insures the liver flush the toxins out into the kidneys for disposal. Alpha lipoic acid, whey protein, and NAC (n-acetylcysteine) all turn up the production of the antioxidant glutathione. So, increasing the production of glutathione is very important.
Natural Cleansing Agents
Not surprisingly, herbs are also a great natural way to cleanse your liver of the buildup of toxins and debris like fat soluble toxins. Liver function can become sluggish after heavy fat laden meals and a particular group of herbs called bitters are the ‘Go to” selection for cleansing. Bitters stimulate digestive secretions -or bile- and thus provide the extra help needed to flush out the debris.
Some really effective bitters include:
- Yellow Dock
Dandelion is the most comprehensive of the group. It promotes detoxification, stimulates bile, reduces congestion, and reduces inflammation. Swedish Bitters are renowned for their blend and effectiveness.
*Use dandelion with caution if you are diabetic because it lowers blood sugar.
Mushrooms to the Rescue
Reishi supports liver function and the immune system
Cordyceps raises glutathione levels
It would be smart to add a digestive mushroom blend to your daily Spring Cleaning Regimen. Mushrooms greatly boost the immune system function.
Don’t overlook your liver’s health. Your health depends on how well it functions and a clean liver is a productive liver.
